Welcome

to the ewak.net site. Here I will place some stuff I made.

Wastebin Notifier

We have multiple containers for different types of waste.
Green = compost Orange = plastic Blue = paper Gray = all other
One has to be places at the curb in some ingenious schedule. The collection company publishes an API with the collection schedule per address. Why not put it to use?

Why not build a small notifier that signals what bin will be collected?
Why not have that notifier be the shape of a bin with a lid that will light up in the color of the bin? And have a way so signal that the bin has been placed at the curb? My house uses HomeAssistant with ESPhome devices, so let’s build from there.

Washing machine power optimizer

My solar panels generate more power that we consume for 6 months of the year. And the cheapes power is the power you do not have to buy from the grid. So running our machines when I produce an excess is the most efficient solution. But how do I know when to turn on my machines? Most of them are not ‘smart’ and only have a delayed start. So how do I know at what time to program this delayed start? And what are these fun little repurposed epaper price tags I have laying around?…

HackerHotel: talk on cryptography

At Hacker Hotel, I gave an introduction talk on cryptography.

From the program:

What is this DES and why is it bad? Should I always use AES-256, bigger is better right? Who are these RSA-dudes in the first place and why do I need 25519 elliptic curves in my life? Is quantum really that bad for encryption and what can I do about it? If these are questions keeping you up at 05:00, then this talk might be for you!

FabLounge in Deventer

NanoBSD and ALIX

My first article on building and maintaining NanoBSD on an embedded ALIX platform. Published in the June 2011 issue of BSD Magazine.
